Fire Prevention

The Fire Prevention Office acts as a conduit between the fire suppression forces and the community by responding to complaints and problems found during fire/emergency incidents. Fire Prevention assists the business or residential community in finding solutions to abate the reported fire and safety hazards. Fire Prevention works extensively with the City’s Plans Examiner, Building, and Housing Commissioners in reviewing architect and engineering plans. Office conducts Site plan review for fire access and life safety issue. Fire Prevention teams with the Building, Housing, and Police Department for joint inspections and participate in action team activities to target commercial structures that pose safety hazards to the public.

Responsibilities

The Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Office works tirelessly to prevent loss of life as well as property damage through code enforcement, education and community involvement.

The Fire Prevention Office ensures that new and existing fire protection systems are properly maintained. The office is responsible for the reviewing of construction plans for fire protection, emergency access, and regulation conformity; in addition to the investigation and inspection of suspicious fires to determine cause and origin.

Inspections

Inspections focus on maintenance discrepancies, impairments of fire safety appliances and components, educating the general public and business community on fire safety, and other issues that may present a danger to the welfare and safety of the residents. The Fire Prevention Office conducts regular fire prevention inspections on the following facilities:

  • Apartment Complexes
  • Businesses
  • Convalescent Homes
  • Day Cares
  • High Rises
  • Hospitals
  • Industrial Facilities
  • Schools

Special Events

Inspections are also required for special events - tents used to serve the public, outdoor cooking events, and assemblies.
